Project: Bozo the Clown – Let Your Clown Out EP
Client: David Arquette
Art Director: Bill Main
This project was a collaboration with David Arquette and musician Graham Wheeler to create the visual identity for Let Your Clown Out, a limited-edition Bozo the Clown EP. With Bozo’s roots in classic children's records, the design draws inspiration from vintage album covers and televised appearances, aiming to capture both the nostalgia of the character and a fresh, modern feel.
The artwork embraces a playful, interactive approach—flipping the cover reveals what’s happening behind the front illustration, adding an extra layer of fun and discovery. The design also includes hand-drawn typography, a custom vinyl label, and illustrations that reflect Bozo’s timeless spirit. The limited edition vinyl is available through Madame Zuzu’s.
The decision to use a white vinyl for the record was deliberate, as it creates a striking contrast against the vibrant red center label. This choice resonates with the imagery of clowns, alluding to the white face makeup that is synonymous with their playful personas, alongside the bright red clown nose that completes their whimsical appearance. This thoughtful design element not only enhances the visual appeal of the record but also reinforces the theme of joy and nostalgia associated with Bozo's enduring legacy. By intertwining these visual motifs, we invite listeners to immerse themselves in the spirit of the design, while encouraging a connection to the playful artistry of the clown tradition.
Turning the cover over unveils a whimsical surprise: the backsides of the clowns featured on the front. Each clown is adorned with playful "kick me" notes, cleverly attached to their companions beside them. Instead of the typical message, these notes list the whimsical song titles, infusing interactivity into the record cover. The unexpected reveal encourages curiosity and invites viewers to engage with the artwork in a fun, lighthearted way.
David and Graham approached me with a vision for their new label, Rainbow Time Records, and requested a logo that would encapsulate their vibrant energy. We crafted a design that combines a vintage vibe with a fresh appeal, capturing the essence of their music. The rainbow image is artfully constructed from the bands of a vinyl record, symbolizing creativity and diversity in sound. At the center of it all is Bozo, the heart of their recording studio, embodying the passion and spirit that drives their projects. The logo not only stands out but also pays homage to the rich history of music while inviting listeners into a colorful auditory experience.
